Maximizing the DEMO Conference
Establishing Market Leadership in an Emerging Technology Category
The Challenge:
The DEMO Conference is the technology industry's premier emerging technology launch venue where investors, executives, and journalists come to discover the most significant new products and trends that will shape the marketplace in the coming 12-18 months. Every year, hundreds of companies try to secure a coveted spot at DEMO, but only approximately 70 companies are hand selected by Chris Shipley to appear at the prestigious event.
The LP&P Difference:
To assist its clients in getting selected for DEMO 2006, Lois Paul & Partners leveraged its relationship with Chris Shipley to arrange a “Demo Audition” event in its Austin office. LP&P has arranged introductory meetings for clients since Chris began producing DEMO in 1996. To prepare for the event, clients were coached through their pitches and given tips on how to best present their products. In addition, LP&P made arrangements for other clients to meet with Chris if they were unable to attend the Austin event.
As a result of these meetings, four LP&P clients were selected to appear at DEMO. Three clients, including Avokia, LogLogic and Network Streaming accepted the invitation. The fourth company chose to defer its participation to the Fall event. All three participating companies were focused on the enterprise, rather than the consumer, making it harder to produce a compelling, live demo in the prescribed six-minute format. To ensure that the enterprise products were able to gain the attention of the media and attendees despite the “glitzier” consumer products, LP&P worked closely with its clients on:
- Elevating product messaging to make it clear and easy to grasp;
- Providing guidance on the company’s demonstration scripts;
- Working with key media to provide embargoed information on the products to be unveiled; and
- Providing on site support, as needed, including by the agency president, Lois Paul.
The Results:
All three of LP&P’s clients felt the show exceeded their expectations:
- The three LP&P clients participating secured a total of 33 pieces of on-message coverage in all key enterprise outlets, including Network World, Computerworld, and CRN. In many cases, such as eWeek’s preview story, all three of LP&P’s clients were among the handful of companies featured.
- Network Streaming was named a “DEMO God.”
- LP&P clients were included in two analyst write-ups.
- Media contacts that LP&P clients made at the DEMO show have introduced them into new business opportunities.
